Why composition is so important ?
Such kind of questions will come into your mind when you read the title. Let me share my understanding about project team composition.
First of all, let’s try to understand what is project delivery…
Delivery of a project is nothing but to make a real picture of an idea. i.e. One fine day an idea strike into the creative mind of my business analyst or any other member, which eventually be a good source of income for my organization or may be aligned with the far seeing vision of my organization. Bingo ! It will be a project to deliver…
Now good & important point is : HOW ?
Any project/programme is delivered by specific group of individuals. This group is called Team, who is responsible for the delivery of particular project. Over the life of this project we have to fill different potential roles in the Team. Few important stages of this team composition:
Stage 1: Initial team for project – The one who think of this idea. In most of the cases business analyst / Product Managers.
Stage 2: Spearhead of project – The one who will lead the project delivery, most importantly bring required potential in Team to make things happen in right direction. One who will resolve conflicts and overcome challenges in the execution. As their should not be more than one driver for a bus, in same way Spearhead/project lead should be only one individual at a time.
Stage 3: Active members – As fuel is necessary to run a machine, in the same way active members is necessary to deliver the project. These are the ones who are subject/domain/vertical experts, will do actual development.
Stage 4: Stakeholders – The one who potentially will be affected by project activities and have something to gain or lose if conditions change or stay the same. Just because someone is a stakeholder does not mean that you will want them on your project team. But if they are a key stakeholder, you also cannot ignore them in your analyses of the situation.
Stage 5: Advisor / Facilitator – The one who can help in planning the processes. To whom team can approach for feedback & advice. He will be a mentor not only for the spearhead of this project but also for every member of this team. The one who can look upto in crisis situation. One should be familiar with applying the planning process to “real-world” specially in the organization.
On top of knowing your Project Team, it is also important to know
- How the team will work together ?
- Rough / tentative timeline of the project
- How many resources (domain/vertical/subject experts) are required/expected for complete project cycle
- We can’t fully define everything but at least we have to clarify that what we do & don’t know in project charter.

Why it’s so important to have correct composition of project team ?
To launch any rocket, a rock solid launch pad is must. In similar way, If you don’t identify correct individuals (experts) and processes involved in the project, you would not be able to deliver the project efficiently. Hence by correct composition only you have a good chance of being ultimately successful.
Having project team members with different skills, knowledge, and experience will generally lead to a more creative and resilient project. Eventually more inclined towards innovative implementation methodologies and reusability from the experience of different subject experts.
